Life Journey : Perseverance and commitment can work wonders, it is often one great way of overcoming odds and fulfilling your dreams. For Vipul Narigara, the dream of playing cricket was indeed far-fetched, especially considering the humble background, but it was dream and the young man kept at it, each day slogging it out, each day striving harder than the day before, juggling between jobs to make ends meet and honing his trade all the while.
Born in Dungar (Rajula), the son of a farmer, Vipul knew from a young age that nothing will come easy and that he had to go the extra mile to achieve his dreams. He finished his primary education – from class 1 to class 7 in a Government school in Dungar. In 2010, he shifted base and headed across to Gandhinagar for Diploma in IC Engineering in Government Polytechnic, Gandhinagar.
It was there where he had the first taste of cricket and destiny came knocking at door – he started cricket coaching in Sports Authority of India in cricket center back in 2011. However, he had to make ends meet and hence, picked up jobs like a waiter in a restaurant and a laborer in an ice cream factory.
It was a struggle, and he confesses that when he got a job as a data operator, it was very difficult to find time and money in order manage his studies as well as cricket. And in a new space, there was always this problem of finding accommodation.
“One of the most difficult phase of my life came in 2011-2012 when he could afford to eat only a vada paav as there was no money to even cobble up even meager meals twice in a day,” Vipul recalls.
Owing to such a taxing schedule, he had to quit diploma in the fourth semester as he wanted to take up cricket professionally and devote all his energy in one particular direction. He lists out his grueling schedule – the day started at six in the morning and he would be on the field toll nine. Following this, he had to rush across to attend college which started at 11 am and lasted till 5 pm. He was back again to practice cricket at 5:30 pm and this would conclude at 7:30 pm.
And after all this, work beckoned as he dragged himself to the restaurant to start catering. Also, he recalls that for three months, he had to work as a laborer in a factory from 1 am to 3 am.
This is when he registered himself in new club – Valiant club. Currently, it is one of the top cricket club and is mentored by former Indian cricketer Chetan Sharma.
The rise for Vipul was quite rapid and finally his perseverance paid dividends, In 2014, he was appointed captain of the Valiantan Volcano Vadodara, which is one of the marquee teams in the Valiant Premier League in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Under his captaincy, Team Valiant won the title of the Wai Wai Cricket Series against PCC in Nepal for the first time in 2015.
His name was rising through the ranks and in October 31, 2015 when Red Cross Society – Narmada awarded the cricketing heroes of the region, Vipul was invited at the chief guest which gave him immense popularity. Vipul was now appointed skipper of the Surat Warriors and was at the helm for two years between 2016 and 2018. However, things did not go according to plan as his side had to content with the wooden spoon for two consecutive years.
He shared a world record partnership worth 82 runs for the 10th wicket in T20 cricket in club cricket history. Vipul scored 40 runs in 16 balls which included five fours and two maximums and combined brilliantly with A. Tyagi to notch up this record.
Things changed once again for Vipul as in 2019, VPL became one of the high-profile leagues in the country and several Bollywood celebrities which included Rahul Roy, Meet Brothers and Stebin Ben involved with the league.
Vipul was appointed captain of one of the most popular teams of the league – Mumbai Horses. It is here that the young man came into his own.After the initial struggles, Vipul is certainly realizing his dreams and the young man is persistent and consistent and if the recent string of scores is anything to go by, the road ahead seems to promising for the promising youngster.
